Pretty cool garden and museum with great views surrounding the compound. Very zen. Only had 30 minutes as I got there at 5pm, but I was able to see a decent amount of the garden.

At the garden, you can enjoy a magnificent view of Sakurajima! It's a wonderful experience to have a walking tour around the old buildings. Must see in Kagoshima!

Nice garden and museum with adequate (though not complete) English translation. Do not follow the suggested route as you will miss some the shrines and nice nature (though you will pass all the shops). There is a mountain bike to some higher pavilions but it was closed due to weather (slight rain) on the day we went.

Absolutely stunning historical Japanese residence and gardens! The best place to visit in Kagoshima!Went with a family group of 10. Had a great lunch with a beautiful view of the volcano, Sakurajima, before walking around the gardens. The house itself has lots of interesting information about its history and the impact the Shimadzu family had on Japan. Japanese signs were always accompanied by English text. There is also a museum adjacent to the gardens as well as traditional factories where you can see traditional pottery and cut glass being made. Lots of shops selling locally made goods and sweets, too. Can't recommend highly enough!

Nice scene. In the morning, Sakurajima was half visible because of the volcanic ash.A couple hours from then, the volcano was clearly seen from the master's study room.A rare experience protecting my digital camera from the volcanic ash by covering a towel on it.A small towel would be very useful when visiting this city.

entry fee= 1000Â¥ garden only or 1500Â¥ garden & house. recommend to do both and absolutely worth it. beautifully maintained! also hike up above the garden for more spectacular views of sakurajima. only a few opted for this option so it was incredibly peaceful. the city view bus for 1,90Â¥ stops in front entrance, starts at kagoshima chuo bus stall e4, 49 minutes ride.

Can get a very nice view of Sakurajima. Please be wary that in case of eruption, dust and sulphur can fall over till here (the park) sometimes, so please carry an umbrella. The park is very beautiful, with informative interior tours of the residence at this garden.

It's a nice walk in the garden and although it has a rich history, the toilets are very nice and new (that's important too right?). The kids didn't enjoy it so much here but they do have an activity for them where they can collect stamps at different locations (we asked the lady who gave us the activity sheet to point out on the map where the stamps were!) and then exchange it for a small souvenir.

Worth the visit if you enjoy history and nature. The gardens are beautiful despite only azaleas in bloom (was there early June). We enjoyed strolling through the shops. Many products here are unique to Kagoshima and hard to find rest of Japan, so support the local artists and craftsmen. We ate at restaurant on site. It was good, not great, but good.

One of the best places to enjoy the stunning view and admire the sheer size of Sakurajima. However, this place is not just about sightseeing. The Japanese Garden outside this residence of Prince Shimadzu Tadayoshi is a good place for a leisure walk. It gives you a peace of mind. The House itself also showcases the life of some upper class people in the past. This world cultural heritage site is rather large. You can easily spend a whole afternoon here. Be sure to reserve enough time (at least 2 hours) for your visit.

Facing the famed Sakurajima volcano, it is a grand mansion of an old samurai feudal lord in Japan. Choose a day with sunny weather to come and you will not regret it.

Truly lovely extensive well maintained Japanese park garden with amazing view of Sakurajima. Take the City View bus from JR station. The park has restaurants and shops as well. You can visit the mansion and a museum. There is a hiking trail to the top of a hill, takes about 25-30 minutes uphill. Top tourist spot in Kagoshima.

One of the very beautiful Japanese style gardens of Kagoshima. Well kept, artistic and with the amazing view of Sakurajima Island. The Sengan-en garden consists of many ponds, shrines and streams and the beautiful bamboo grove. Love the small hike along the hilly path. At the end of the journey, there is this shop selling tasty biscuits/cakes.

Large garden which costs 1000 yen to enter with a couple of museums at the front. English signage and explanations are quite strong. Expect to probably spend around two hours here. Not the best garden in Japan but it's one of the better ones. Might best best garden in Kyushu

The garden was built by a powerful ancient family in Japan that used to rule Kagoshima. It'as an impressive garden with a lot of attention to detail. You can see that the founder had a good vision of the future as there are remains of early stage factories (one of the firsts in Japan). I recommend to visit the nearby Museum to get an idea of the industrial revolution initated by the family. You should spend at least 2 hours.

If it is only at the important point, can it be seen that there will be an hour, but if it is a palace or an ancient conglomerate slowly it will be more than two hours?
